SpaceX Cybertruck on Mars - The Tesla Paper Prototype
In perhaps the greatest mashup since Girl Talk’s All Day, or the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, Hohman Design was possessed with the idea of taking the paper-model plans for DIY Designer’s Tesla Cybertruck, and passing them through a Mars filter. All inspired by the prescient RUclips Space Journalist Marcus House, resulting in the compelling and metamorphic, Hohman Design Mars-Edition paper-model Cybertruck.

    My Estes Saturn V had a few great launches off a D12-3 motor. Then one day I guess the main parachutes were packed too tight. At apogee the ejection charge went off and only the capsule and it’s parachute ejected! The rest of the Saturn became an accordian landing crash. At least the crew was saved!

    • @HohmanDesign
      @HohmanDesign 9 дней назад

      Indeed! The crew was spared! I was working on a model rocket modified to carry a Lego minifigure crew years back. I should dig it out and complete it. Your launch story is in the zeitgeist, reminding me of the Space X anomaly a few days ago.They too had a successful second stage performance despite the booster crash 8/28/24.

Also got Apogee 1:70 scale Saturn 1B and Saturn V together with Hiroc and a number of other rockets to build so going to be busy however the 1B and the Saturn V 1:70 scale will be the last to build once I get the others out of the way I have bought so much from Apogee I am now a VIR so my orders get done straight away only problem I have to wait a couple of weeks for USPS to deliver here in the uk anyway I keep watching your saturn v build over and over again Keep up the good work I have subscribed Regards Terry UK

    Right now I'm in the process of building this exact same rocket from Apogee with the exact same engine. Your failure will press me to be really careful when assembling the engine and securing it in the tube. Thanks for the warning. I remember in the 70's buying some C rocket engines that were half price and thought i got a good deal. But they did the same as your engine in that the ejection charge went off right after ignition. I think the fuel was not glued to the casing securely. Your rocket painting was beautiful! I hope mine ends up half that. I'm almost done with the booster section and it is a lot of work but I've learned much about the great Saturn V. I wondered why did it have fins? Well Von Braun wanted to give it an extra couple seconds of stability in case it lost auto control to give time for the escape system to get the astronauts far enough away before it broke up and exploded.

      Thank you for commenting! It's such a good model, a fun build and presumably a great one to fly. Just prep your motor days before so any adhesives from the assembly dry. I don't think motor retention was our problem. Had our motor completed a burn and then fired the charge, things probably would have gone as planned. Our motor came apart in a hot second and blew out both ends. We still intend to repair and re-fly. I hope you subscribe for whenever that happens and that we end up doing more to interest you. Also hope to hear more from you on your flight. If you remember, add another comment with your results or DM us a link to any social media posts about your project or flight. Ad Astra! I didn't know that about the fins BTW, thanks for sharing.

      I launched my Saturn V and it was successful! I sent a link to your company email for videos and details. Thanks for your advice about building engines ahead of time. My first G79-4W engine did not ignite and switched to my backup engine which seemed to also not ignite but after 1.6 sec delay it did. I know the feeling of inviting all those people and then having it not work. It's a big risk. Hope you try again. I love you launch tower.

    My first thought of an alternate version took us back to our childhood, and watching three old WW2 show The Rat Patrol 😊 Mount an M2 Browning .50 caliber in the bed... big ole oversized nobby sand tires... Extra gas & water tanks... And have a military desert expedition version 😉

      Cybertruck technical! dark. But I like the desert rat twist, laden with overlanding gear. There have been recent and frequent comparisons to the late 70's Lamborghini LM002, which I'm sure you remember had a military version called the Cheetah, aka the Rambo Lambos, roof hatches and all. First time I ever heard about Central Tire Inflation Systems. Speaking of desert rats, have you seen the BBC Series on the formation of the SAS, Rouge Heroes? It's an entertaining way to bring the modern mind partway into the environment and charismatic figures surrounding those auspicious origin events. I think the true story is every bit as fascinating as this one in which "the events depicted which seem most unbelievable… are mostly true", but this one does its own thing well as art and entertainment.

Our gantry was printed in parts from the files you can find here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:5024532 I recall it's creator was working with a smaller printer and at a different scale so he had every little part broken out to print individually. We took one part we knew the size of and used the percent different in size to scale all the parts to the scale of our rocket. We additionally took some of his individual parts and created our own subassemblies on the computer for prints we made on larger printers. We used measurements we took from that model and scaled them to design and build our own simplified plywood box as the launch platform but he has the model for a highly detailed base as well depending on your needs and interests. Good Luck!

    This reminds of all the the rc airplanes I built , I built a 1:10th scale F-4 phantom jet, took a a good solid year to build to scale. On the 4th flight a friend of mine he took off with his BVM F-86Sabre , beautiful jet ( it was) .He turned around in flight & started to fly in reverse flight pattern. Well lets says I realized we were heading nose to nose ,I chopped the throttle dropped the flaps & she pitched up & then his jet impacted mine rite in the bell pan. Fiberglass clowd, we both took our jets home in garbage bags. You never know in a hooby of any kind when you will have a failure, but we do the repairs & move forward. She's a beauty

    Do you have any plans or schematics for the launch controller? I'd love to make one like this!

    • @HohmanDesign
      @HohmanDesign Год назад

      Hi Cody! What's your level of experience in electronics? The controller is rudimentary to say the least. Three simple concepts govern the whole project. First, the device is simply just a chain of switches. Power is passed from one switch to the next switch in-line and any switch that's OFF along the path will prevent a launch. While the narrative is one of "standby" modes, and "arming", the box is a dumb enclosure. There are no boards or chips (save for the clock), simply switches and wires. Second, most switches are double pole, so that each switch in the bottom of the case illuminates a status indicator in the lid of the case. While the signal for launch passes through one pole of each switch, the wiring for the other pole is made discreetly so the light comes on for a given "status" even if a preceding switch in the chain is OFF. This way, you get all the activity and drama out of the board when used in any order, while launch is impossible until the whole chain of switches are all ON. Third, it may be possible that the power running through all those switches has the adequate amperage to set off an igniter, we don't know, we never tested that. But just in case there was too much impedance in the chain, or even in any one of our components, our launch "signal", as it's passed through the final launch button, is not used to travel out to the pad and light an ignitor, rather, it simply toggles a relay that passes the unhindered amperage of the big video-camera battery right down the cord to the igniter. I got help with the audio component which was outside my wheelhouse, and the countdown clock with relay for automated launch is still unfinished. The clock with relay is wired in for auto-launch capability but the instructions for that board, which we found on Amazon, are in Russian and we have yet to figure out how to use it. We will be making a video specifically for the launch controller which should demonstrate all the things I have shared here and more so please subscribe and check back to see that content when we are finally able to do that. Additionally, depending on how serious your effort to duplicate this project becomes, please DM @HohmanDesign on Twitter or Instagram and I can probably arrange to share the closest artifacts we have to a "schematic" with you, though I would suggest not getting your hopes up in regards to our documentation. Thanks for watching, and your interest in the controller specifically, we can't wait to get the long overdue video out for this project.

      Thank you! I think my disillusion with the titanium finish is that I used a dark grey primer and a flat black paint. In the past, when I was painting props like air-soft, foam or rubber weapons, I used a light grey primer and a flat black paint and had I done that here, it would have produced the familiar effect for me.

      That nails on a chalkboard thing is called ASMR, all the kids are doing it these days. 😂 Ever since the character played by Tom Cruise in Magnolia mispronounces heinous as hein-ee-ous, and then furiously corrects himself to heinous, I always say it twice the same way. So thank you for that even if you weren't aware. Thanks for hanging in with us thru the cringe!

    I had the 1975 version - was one of my first sets. They did a pretty good job back then with so few types of pieces and no specialty pieces made specifically for the set. There wasn't even a 90 degree angle piece that could turn your build from vertical to horizonal other than the 2x4 hinge you see the ladder attached to. I made good use of those "jet engine" piece of the years, though, putting them on my jets, helicopters, space ships, cars etc. before I got my first space lego sets!

      Dammit Jim! I love that user name! The calendar tracks one habit as I understand it. A habit tracking app is the fully featured tool for both reminders and rewards for many tasks. For me the calendar is an art object, an assemblage of your commitment to some primary clarity one is seeking, perhaps in the sense that if I can do this one thing well, it will likely inform my success in other areas.

    Make/Fail Cycle? Um... during iteration, NOT the moment of Truth. People took time to show up. That implies accountability.

    • @HohmanDesign
      @HohmanDesign 2 года назад

      Pete, Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to reply. Let me start by saying, if you feel like you took the time to show up and watch our video, and you were let down due to any negligence on our part. I am sorry. There are several things that are all true at the same time regarding this project. First in the world of model rocketry there is a fairly high ratio of failures to launches. People flying at festivals with various levels of preparation often have their "moment of truth" result in things like an engine "robin hood" or "zipper" or "lawn dart" or some other catastrophic failure or "CATO". Those are almost always the result of some kind of user error as all of us amateurs are on a path of learning by experience, and usually the hard way. We had other successful flights on this day and other failures not seen in the video, this is all fairly common. Next I'll say that a museum quality build like our Saturn V is often something you don't want to fly twice, if ever! We planned from the start to attempt a celebratory launch, hoping beyond hope that we would not lose the rocket to a CATO or water feature or simply see it disappear forever into updrafts which we have experienced with other projects. There wasn't going to be any test flying prior to what we hoped to be a single anniversary attempt. Nevertheless, you make a strong point about accountability that touches on how hard it is to bring multiple complex projects together on a fixed schedule. We're talking about stacks of accountability, to various stake holders, often with conflicting interests, the farm owner who loaned us everything and scores volunteers who built things and others who came to film for us, friends and family in attendance, some from out of town. But the accountability extends far beyond the success of the flight, there is tying off several projects to some disappointing level of minimum completion, so the critical sleep needed before game day is just not happening... There are commitments falling through of those who planned to help and no longer can, so perhaps the video cannot be made which undermines our commitment to those who built things, there is the safety of those who came to participate and spectate, heat, hydration, parking, bathroom, and who have vasty different expectations based on their knowledge of the activity. There are the additional obligations of hosting guests for a weekend, and these few hours launching are just a small part of those commitments. We had more stinging failures of accountability than just having a model rocket failure which happens all the time. For one instance, we had prepared to include the cornbread and beans tradition of KSC, who since the shuttle program report to Houston "We have beans" after a successful launch and so we had volunteers prepare pans of beans and corn bread, vegan and omnivorous versions of each, and in the scramble of the failure, improving a video wrap up, and everyone's desperation to escape the heat, the announcement of our catered elements never happened and those unopened dishes went home unappreciated. My accountability to those with skin in the game like that haunts me.There are several lessons I take from the weekend and they all relate to delegating. The episode needed a producer to keep the production well in hand and if the host is the up-all-night builder then it has to be someone else. The event needed a planner who kept the itinerary up and made sure there was context provided for all who came, and that also shouldn't have been me. We should've courted contributors who had more rocketry experience if we were up around the limits of our experience, even if those people were strangers, and of course, start earlier. Even still, we did start early "enough" until volunteer's other priorities understandably delayed various builds and shoots and you can always imagine how much better things could go with more volunteer help in the form of producers and coordinators but there is only one of each of us who can actually show up so I don't know how helpful it is to fantasize about the assistance we didn't have. Hopefully what's important is the doing, and in the doing the failures, and in the failures the haunting, which you can detect bleeding all over the place here, and in the haunting, a better job next time. Even still, as capabilities are painfully earned, excitement grows and we reach for the stars with ambitious efforts extending beyond our new level of competency ensuring that the make/fail cycle inevitably continues. Thank you for prompting me to share these raw and still nauseating lessons. If you can think of additional corrective actions that ought to be obvious here, please let me know. I hope you decide to join us on the adventure of growing our skills and reaching for new heights, mistakes and all.
